I have heard the hood vents are fake -- how can they be made to act like real vents

You can cut holes in the fire material on the inside of the hood.

Hood vents even in the muscle car days when you had the air grabber hoods really did not do much for performance. You had to go extreme speed to get any horsepower credits. Best to go with cold air box.

My 2009 Challenger RT had fake vents. SRT8 vents had holes. Not sure if the vents are the same.

I would hate it if that's the case since at that point it gets kind of corny and takes away from the vehicle. But they might see a need for the sake of design.

I thought the vents were functional. Do they just allow for more air under the hood?

Resolution: Replace them with Challenger SRT8 inserts, although this will require the under hood cover to be cut.
