My Rear Axle Failure

There is a recall for the rear axle shaft (R59), head the warning. Was waiting for some time off to have mine done.. never got the chance.

There was a vibration coming somewhere from the rear of my truck, started off light, barely noticeable, thought it was my tires or something simple, but after a day or three, started to vibrate badly and made a small thumping noise, took it to dealer and they had to replace the whole rear end from the damage it caused.

have a crappy rental now waiting for it to get fixed... blah.

Was it at least covered by warranty since the failure was caused by the faulty axle shaft?
Sounds like you escaped an easily $5k job, at best.
How many miles do you have on it so far? Hopefully this is an isolated issue and not something that pops up common enough.
yes warranty is covering it.
have 4084 miles on it
Did you verify whether the left rear axle was heat treated or not? It sounds like the symptoms that were described as likely if driven too much on it - metal fragments chipping off into the axle housing and eventually the rear differential. If it was the cause, according to the recall it could have resulted in a rear wheel separation and a crash. Glad you didn't get that far.
Wow. I just passed 8,000 miles on mine. Called the dealership a few weeks ago for the recall, they can't get me in until mid February, maybe they're waiting for parts? I don't know but I hope it holds up till then!

If you`re looking for more answers, reaching out to RAM Trucks USA and seeing what information they`re able to give you might help. I noticed that dealers are very limiting on what they tell you, unless you have a close relationship with someone there.

Recall reason: because the rear axle shaft was improperly heat-treated which can cause it to overheat, wear down and then fracture which could lead to one of your wheels falling off. Apparently, FCA knew of one accident where this happened.

If possible, maybe bring your Ram to your dealership to hold onto while waiting for the part and ask if they can give you a rental to drive for free in the meantime? Pretty sure the dealership wouldn't want to deal with rebels where the wheel separated from the body.

Hope this gets fixed for everyone soon.
