Just wondering what you guys thoughts were on the break in period for towing. Just bought a brand new truck to tow my boat, now come to find out I can't tow it till after 500 miles. ?
Every truck / jeep / suv I've ever owned has said the same in the manual, some for 1000 miles. It's supposed to be for bedding in the brake pads, piston rings and bearings, valve seats, and various other things. Most brake manufacturers recommend you avoid hard stops for at least the first 500 miles.
You're supposed to avoid serious strain on the engine for that time so all these things wear themselves in correctly. The preferred method is to work through most of the RPM range a lot, like in city driving. Hard acceleration isn't recommended, but delaying shifting to run the rpms up is a good thing during this time. Putting real strain on can supposedly cause some of these things to wear improperly.
I found it took no time at all to get my first 500 miles because the truck's been fun to drive. Bought mine off the lot with 125 miles on it, and I had 300 on it by the end of the first day, went on a country drive with the wife.
